The unity candle is by far one of the most popular types of wedding candles. The unity candle is a fairly new addition to wedding ceremonies and its use is most prevalent in the United States. A unity candle consists of two taper candles and a large pillar candle in the center of the design. The taper candles are used by the bride and groom to simultaneously light the center pillar candle, representing the two individuals becoming one family. The candle set is held by a special unity candle holder that has 2 arms for holding the taper candles on either side of the central pillar candle. It is tradition for the couple to relight the candle every year on their anniversary.

Often, wedding candles are made of white wax. The candles may be decorated with an inscription, a picture of the couple or any other type of ornamentation. The lighting of wedding candles is typically done during the wedding ceremony after the couple has said their formal vows.
