Katherine survived but was left with scars on her face and vision problems. At age 20, she was baptized by some French missionaries. She had to suffer great abuse and rejection for her faith by her family and other peoples until she reached a Christian village near Montreal. She died on April 17, 1680 at the age of 24 in New France. She was canonized on October 21, 2012 by Pope Benedict. The church celebrates its day every year on July 14.
