Lavabos / Ewers / Flagons

Lavabo sets, ewers and flagons are all different types of vessels that are used during the Mass celebration. A lavabo set is designed for use during the ceremonial the washing of the hands. It includes a lavabo bowl and an ewer. The ewer holds water, which is then poured into the bowl for the priest to use to wash their hands before the beginning of Mass. The flagon is used to hold the consecrated wine before it is poured into the chalice during communion. The chalice is refilled from reserve portions of wine kept in the flagon during the service. The flagon is typically left on the altar at the Offertory during services and cups or a chalice are brought to the altar to be filled after the Breaking of Bread.
